Journey Among Women (1977)

In Journey Among Women ten convict women escape from the fetid Hell of a colonial prison cell, and from the brutality and sexual abuse of their gaolers. In the Australian bush they live in wild harmony until one by one they are hunted down in a savage and bloodthirsty climax!

If you ever get a chance to see Journey Among Women (it’s doing the rounds on Foxtel’s ENCORE channel at the moment), don’t be put off by the obvious feminist overtones (which are strange, seeing as it was written, directed and filmed by men) – it’s an important story that wasn’t quite pulled off by those involved, but well worth a look anyway. Set in an 19th Century convict settlement in Australia (presumably Tasmania, but I could be lying), it tells of a group of women who escape the torrid conditions under which they were kept by the male guards, who frequently physically, sexually and emotionally abused them. You’ll kind of have to imagine the social commentary that exists as the women shed the civilisation from whence they came – and their clothes, as well.”
